We left the Tameling Campground and drove about 25 miles to The Old Joliet Prison for a 10:00 AM tour. The tour is self-guided and the prison is in VERY poor condition. They charge $22 per person and after completing our tour we both agreed it was not worth the money or the time we spent. We gave the Old Joliet Prison a 1-Star rating.
The most interesting part of the tour was a lengthy conversation with one of the guides named, Jim. He gave us a bit of history on the prison when it was in operation and after it closed. It was closed and sat abandoned for years. Between homeless encampments, urban explorers and vandals what remained after it closed was destroyed. Jim said that even though the state and city have spent millions on repairs it is in need of so much and the money is just not available. He feels that the entire prison will be demolished in the not too distant future.
After we left the prison we went to Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket in Willowbrook. The food, especially the fried chicken is really good. It's not wonder it's so popular and rated so highly year after year.
Over lunch we looked at our itinerary and decided that since we just visited Chicago in 2024 we are going to skip Chicago and head on to the Michigan and Great Lakes portion of our trip.
Before heading on towards Michigan we made a quick stop at Target to pick up a few supplies and groceries.
We found the route leading towards Warren Dunes State Beach in Michigan. We ran into a lot of traffic and road construction on the route and considered Indiana Dunes National Park as a stop for the night. However, they had no sites available so I started calling other places in the vicinity. I was able to reserve a space at Woodland Village RV and Mobile Home Park in Portage, Indiana. We had good directions to get the the campground but two of the key roads were closed because of downed trees and wires caused by the tornadoes that ran through the Midwest yesterday.
When we arrived at the campground the manager was waiting for us and directed us to our space. Because there was a major power outage affecting the whole area he said there would be no charge for our space.
As we were setting up a lady from the space behind us came over and said they were running a generator and knew it was noisy but "Don't worry we're going to turn it off before it gets late."
We were still full from our big lunch so we just had some light snacks for dinner. As we sat here listening to their LOUD generator noise
Bill got more and more angry by the minute. At 10:15 PM he knocked on their door twice and either they weren't home or refused to answer the door so Bill turned off their generator himself.
Finally with some peace and quiet we went to bed.
