After we got home from the Cozy Dog Drive-In Bill and I read for a while and went to bed. It started raining a lot harder and the wind really picked up. We got up and brought the slides in to prevent wind damage and went back to bed.
At 11:05 PM Paula called me and said, "Are you hearing this?" No sooner than our call ended our phones started blaring alerts from the National Weather Service.
"TORNADO approaching if you are in a mobile home get to more substantial shelter immediately!"
Right after the alert the wind started shaking the motorhome so bad that I thought for a second we might tip over. We jumped up, threw on whatever clothes were nearby, grabbed my purse, cellphones and chargers and met Paula and Jeff outside in the pouring rain.
We all got in their jeep along with their dog and drove away to find shelter. We drove two or three miles and saw a Chase Bank so we pulled next to the bank between the bank wall and the drive-up ATM machines. We stayed at the bank until 12:15 AM by which time the TORNADO ALERT was over. We returned to the campground and thankfully both of our motorhomes were safe and undamaged.
Throughout the rest of the night there was wind, heavy rain, lightning and thunder.
This morning we found out that the tornado had touched down 1.3 miles from us where it destroyed an animal shelter. Fortunately all the animals are accounted for and found to be safe and not injured. The airport also sustained significant damage with hangers damaged, planes thrown into walls, and one plane was found with no tail or wings.
There is a massive power outage and there are trees and branches down everywhere.
