We got up this morning with plans for all four of us to visit the sights in St. Louis but Jeff was still concerned about their motorhome since they lost all power again so he decided to stay back and try to resolve that problem and to watch their dog, Harley.
Paula, Bill, and I headed out about 9:15 in their jeep to visit the Gateway Arch. The arch is in downtown St. Louis and only about 4 miles from the campground. We purchased tickets for the tram ride to the top of the arch and movie about its construction. The three of us took the tram to the top of the 630' arch. The tram car is very small and takes 4 minutes to go up and 3 minutes to return. The windows provide incredible views of the St. Louis area and the Mississippi River.
The movie about the building of the Arch was very informative. We were all amazed that the workers were so high up and none of them wore a tether or safety harnesses. Miraculously, no one was killed or seriously injured during the project.
Before we left the Arch we had to sample a St. Louis specialty, toasted ravioli.
After we left we made a drive-by visit to the Busch Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team plays.
Paula wanted to visit the Do-Nut Drive In so we drove over and picked out a few donuts to take home for tomorrow morning.
The Laumeier Sculpture Park had been recommended by someone so we went by. The sculptures are all modern art or abstract sculptures and each had a plaque explaining the artist's "Vision". Bill and I looked at several of the sculptures and decided that apparently we are not sufficiently evolved to understand the sculpture or the supposed meaning because we didn't "get" any of them. It was a 3/4 mile walk and it was hot and humid so we decided to give up and remain blissfully ignorant to the intended meanings.
We stopped by the famous Ted Drew's to pick up some of the frozen custard to take home. Bill and I had leftovers for dinner and followed up with our frozen custard (ice cream). Bill had butterscotch and said it was the best he's ever tasted.
In the morning we will head to Springfield to see the Lincoln Museum.
