We pulled out of Needles a little after 9:00 and headed towards Oatman. We crossed into Arizona at Topock and approached Oatman from the west on Oatman Highway .
When we arrived we walked through the town, petted the burros roaming the streets, watched a "gun fight", and bought a couple of souvenirs.
After walking around town for a while, we decided to go into the old Oatman Hotel for lunch. The place is pretty cool with dollar bills covering every inch of the restaurant. All four of us ordered a different sandwich and all of them were very good.
We were not able to continue east on Oatman Highway because Sitgreaves Pass (also known as Sidewinder) is not safe for larger vehicles. It is steep, narrow, and windy. In one section there are about 90 or more switchbacks in an 8 mile stretch. We backtracked to Topock to pick up the I-40 heading towards Kingman.
We arrived in Kingman about 3:30 PM and checked in to the Fort Beale RV Park. It is very basic but also very close to Historic Downtown Kingman. After setting up and relaxing a bit we took Jeff and Paula's jeep into town. We saw the Historic Water Towers, the Drive Through Sign, and the neon "Heart of Kingman" sign. We went to Mr. D'z Route 66 Diner for dinner. Bill and Jeff each had pizza and Paula and I both had the chicken fried steak. We all had a mug of their homemade root beer. Everyone enjoyed their food before heading back home for the evening.
In the morning we will see a few more things in Kingman before heading on to Hackenberry and Peach Springs.
