We were awakened at about 2:30 AM with crazy strong winds and some rain. Bill went outside to bring in our camping chairs so they wouldn't blow away. When he went out they had already blown over. When we got up we learned that Jeff had gone out about the same time to get their chairs and he decided to close their slides because the slide toppers were flapping so much and he didn't want them to tear.
We decided to stay an extra night in Holbrook so we could tour the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert. We had seen a tiny part of the Petrified Forest years ago when our kids were little but we had never been through the park. The petrified logs and all the colorful and varied land formations were incredible. The most interesting thing was the petroglyphs we saw in several locations. There was an old car marking the only spot that the old Route 66 crossed the National Park.
When we left the Petrified Forest we decided to backtrack a little and go to the Winslow 9-11 Memorial Garden. The steel girders are from the Twin Towers that were brought down in New York City.
Our last stop before dinner was at the Here It Is Jack Rabbit Trading Post. I had wanted to stop and see it yesterday but we missed it. We stopped in and Bill picked out a piece of petrified wood he wanted for our front yard and I found a photo album book of the most iconic stops along Route 66. In talking to the owners Bill had told them he was a retired firefighter and that we had just come from the 9-11 Memorial. They insisted on giving us the piece of petrified wood and the book and absolutely refused to take any money for either item.
We got back into Holbrook just after 4:00 PM and went to Tom and Suzie's Diner for an early dinner since none of us had eaten all day and we were all pretty hungry. The food was good, the portions good sized and the prices were reasonable.
We got back "home" to the RVs and plan to relax and get to bed early. This vacation stuff is hard work!
