We left Mojave Narrows Regional Park and headed to meet Paula and Jeff at Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch for the start of our Route 66 adventure together. We had planned to meet at noon but due to a miscalculation on timing we actually got together about 1:20 PM.
While we were waiting a group of 30 Harley Davidson motorcycles pulled up. There were 32 members of the group from Quebec, Canada. They were traveling all of Route 66 plus a couple of National Parks in Utah. They are planning to get to Santa Monica in a couple of days and then go on to Dallas. Once in Dallas a couple of big trailers will load up the bikes and drive them home and the riders will fly home to Quebec.
When Jeff and Paula arrived we walked through the Bottle Tree Ranch. A quirky, interesting place right on the side of the road in Oro Grande, CA.
After the Bottle Tree Ranch we continued along Route 66 and stopped at a few iconic relics from the past including the Bagdad Motel, the Ludlow Cafe, the Amboy Crater, and the sign from the original Roy's Motel.
There were three detours onto gravel where they are repairing the road and bridges. The extent of the repairs was surprising considering that Route 66 is a decommissioned highway. At one point we had to detour onto I-40 to continue on towards Needles, CA for dinner and our stop for the night.
We ate dinner at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant and then drove a short distance to the Desert View RV Resort. We arrived after 8:00 PM which was a lot later than we had hoped to arrive. We sat with Jeff and Paula and mapped out our plans for the next few days. In the morning we will be heading to Oatman, AZ.
